Un faisceau de rayons parallèles réfléchis par un miroir sphérique ne converge pas en un point. Une forme particulière, appelée caustique, apparaît. C’est l’enveloppe des rayons réfléchis.
Si le miroir est parabolique en revanche, les rayons réfléchis convergent en un point appelé « foyer ».
